Johnson-Lindenstrauss lemma
JL Lemma
Johnson-Lindenstrauss lemma (1984)
For any set of data points , there exists a linear map where such that for all ,
Equivalently,
because for small , and .
Equivalently,
because for small , and .
Such a map can be computed in -time.
Proof using distributional Johnson-Lindenstrauss lemma:
We have a set of vectors . Fix .
Let . By linearity, .
By distributional JL Lemma, with probability ,
Finally, set . Since there are total pairs, by a union bound we have that with probability , the above will hold for all , as long as we compress to:
dimensions.
This is a type of Euclidean dimensionality reduction.
